Noble Connections: Robert Dudley’s father was Duke of Northumberland and his grandfather was Edmund Dudley, who was a trusted advisor of Henry VII, executed by Henry VIII. Robert was the favourite of Elizabeth I and he married Lettice Knollys, the widow of the Earl of Essex.

Controversy: The main debate surrounding Robert Dudley was the state of his relationship with Elizabeth I. It has been suggested that they were lovers, or even that they were betrothed or married. It has also been suggested that Robert possibly had a hand in the death of his first wife, Amy Robsart, in 1560.
